Do You Know the Enemy?

After reading Grendel I found Beowulf to be much more interesting. In Grendel the "monster and demon" from Beowulf is shown to be quite innocent and childlike. He cried when he was fatally wounded that he "had had accident." It was also interesting to see how Grendel saw man. To him they killed each other for no reason, they didn't eat what they killed and boasted and bragged all the time, despite all of this evidance against man Grendel still tried to give them a second chance and went into the meadhall to be friendly and he was chased out because man assumed that because Grendel was different he was bad.
Grendel's point-of-veiw is espically interesting to look at with all the conflicts going on in the world today because it shows that when you look at both sides of a conflict each side is right in their own mind. For example look at all the conflicts between the Middle East and the United States. To the United States many Middle Easterns are terrorists with extermist values that degrade women and prevent democracy. To the Middle East extremists many Americans are people that are invading their coutries for no reason and promoting immorality by not enforcing a dress code for women. When you look at both sides of this conflict it is easy to see how one side easily makes the other their enemy. To me this fact could be partially resolved if more people were to read Grendel and Beowulf after seeing how easily each side in these two books make each other out to be the enemy the human race might realize that there are two sides to every story and it's easy to find someone to hate and fight against.
I'm not saying these books will magically cause world peace I just think that people, including myself, need to realize that there are always two sides to everything and we need to consider the other sides logic, why they think they're right and we're not, when trying to find a solution.
